Crusaders attacked the land walls while Venetians assaulted the maritime walls from ships (ladders from masts). On July 17, Venetians broke through, capturing 25 towers. The city was set on fire (as a distraction). Emperor Alexios III panicked and fled at night with the treasury (1,000 pounds of gold). The throne was empty.
