Marquis of Montferrat (Northern Italy), he was an experienced warrior. His brother Conrad was king of Jerusalem, killed in 1192. Boniface was allied with Venice and connected to Byzantium (his brother married a Byzantine princess). Ambitious, he dreamed of his own kingdom
