Nikon (1605-1681) was a peasant's son, monk, and Novgorod metropolitan. A close associate of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, he initiated reforms in 1653. Ambitious and authoritative, he clashed with the tsar in 1658 and retreated to a monastery, awaiting a plea for his return
