Sofia Paleolog was the niece of the last Byzantine emperor. Raised in Rome, her marriage to Ivan III was proposed by Pope Paul II. Although Ivan rejected the union, she brought Byzantine traditions to Moscow, establishing it as the 'Third Rome'.
