Pope Innocent III: 'You have stained your swords with the blood of brothers instead of enemies!'. Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates: 'Even Saracens are more merciful than these men bearing the cross.' European chroniclers condemned it (except Venetians — they celebrated the loot).
