Appeared in the 10th-11th centuries as a patronymic (indication of father). Initially a privilege of princes: 'Vladimir Svyatoslavich'. From the 15th century, it spread to boyars, and from the 17th century — to all classes. The full form (-ovich) was long a privilege of the nobility
