The first confrontation between Rus' and the Mongols occurred as generals Jebe and Subedei pursued the Polovtsians. Prince Koten sought help from his son-in-law, Prince Mstislav of Halych. The Rus' forces, numbering around 80,000, were defeated due to lack of unified command.
