Grand Prince Yuri gathered forces on the Sit River when a Mongol detachment discovered and defeated his militia. Yuri was killed in battle, symbolizing the catastrophe for Rus'. The Vladimir throne passed to Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, father of Alexander Nevsky.
