By the 12th century, there were over 200 cities, each a center of craft and trade independent of Kyiv. Novgorod, Vladimir, Halych, and Chernihiv rivaled Kyiv in wealth. Boyars received lands and sought strong local princes, while economic ties were horizontal, not vertical.
