Three public trials of 'enemies of the people' occurred. In 1936, Zinoviev and Kamenev were executed. In 1937, Piatakov and Radek were accused of forming an 'anti-Soviet Trotskyist center'. In 1938, Bukharin and Rykov faced similar charges. Confessions were obtained under torture, and the trials were widely believed in the West
