Venetians set fire to the Muslim quarter (provocation). The fire spread. The second great fire of Constantinople occurred in August 1203. More of the city burned than in July. Thousands died, 100,000 became homeless. Byzantines blamed the crusaders. Hatred for Alexios IV and the Latins grew.
