Kepler's First Law (1609): planets move in ellipses with the Sun at one focus. Eccentricity e: Earth 0.017 (almost circular), Mercury 0.206, Halley's comet 0.967. The semi-major axis a determines the period: T² ∝ a³. Newton derived from the law of universal gravitation (1687).
