Turing Test
Alan Turing (1950) proposed a criterion for intelligence: a machine is indistinguishable from a human in text dialogue. The question shifts from "can a machine think?" to "can a machine imitate thinking?" Critique: Searle's Chinese Room (1980) — understanding vs symbol manipulation
AI Winters
Periods of reduced funding. The first winter (1974-1980) followed the Lighthill report (1973) and failures in machine translation. The second winter (1987-1993) saw the collapse of the expert systems market ($500M to $50M) due to unrealistic promises, lack of computing power, and data scarcity
Dartmouth Seminar (1956)
The birth of AI as a discipline. John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence". Participants included Marvin Minsky, Claude Shannon, and Nathaniel Rochester. The goal was to describe every aspect of learning so precisely that a machine could imitate it, with optimism for human-level intelligence in 20 years
Expert Systems
The first commercial success of AI (1970s-1980s). MYCIN (infection diagnosis, Stanford 1972), DENDRAL (chemical analysis), R1/XCON (DEC computer configuration, saving $40M/year). They combined a knowledge base with an inference mechanism, but faced issues of fragility and rule maintenance complexity
