The fleet arrived on November 10, 1202. Zara was a fortified port, a rival to Venice in the Adriatic. King Emeric of Hungary owned the city. The inhabitants displayed crosses on the walls: 'We are Christians!'. Some crusaders refused to attack, but Venetians and Boniface insisted. The assault began.
