The fleet left Venice on October 8, 1202. Zara (now Zadar, Croatia) was a Christian city, belonging to King Emeric of Hungary (also a crusader!). The siege began on November 10. Defenders displayed crosses on the walls. The crusaders attacked, and Zara surrendered on November 24. Dandolo seized the loot, and the pope excommunicated the crusaders
