The winter of 1202-1203 was spent in Zara. Crusaders and Venetians in the same city faced skirmishes and fights. Loot was divided. The arrival of Alexios Angelos (claimant to the Byzantine throne) offered to help him become emperor — he would pay the crusaders' debt (200,000 marks) and provide troops for Egypt.
