Murtzuphl refused to pay the debt. 'Alexios IV is a usurper; his promises are invalid!' He demanded the Crusaders leave. Skirmishes at the walls ensued. The Crusaders realized there would be no money and decided to storm the city and plunder it. Venice and Boniface agreed. The Pope's prohibition came too late.
